Images and nonlocal vortex pinning in thin superfluid films

چکیده
For thin films of superfluid adsorbed on a disordered substrate, we derive within a mean field (Hartree) description of the condensate the equation of motion for a vortex in the presence of a random potential. The compressible nature of the condensate leads to an effective pinning potential experienced by the vortex which is nonlocal, with a long range tail that smoothes out the random potential coupling the condensate to the substrate. We interpret this nonlocality in terms of images, and relate the effective potential governing the dynamics to the pinning energy arising from the expectation value of the Hamiltonian with respect to the vortex wavefunction.

Effective vortex pinning in MgB2 thin films
We discuss the pinning properties of MgB2 thin films grown by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) and by electron-beam (EB) evaporation. Two mechanisms are identified that contribute most effectively to the pinning of vortices in randomly oriented films. The EB process produces low defected crystallites with a small grain size providing enhanced pinning at grain boundaries without any degradation of ...
متن کاملMagnetic force microscopy of vortex pinning at grain boundaries in superconducting thin films
We succeeded to image with magnetic force microscopy individual vortices in thin Nb films as well as in thin YBa2Cu3O7!d (YBCO) films. Relying on the imaging of microfabricated gold loops, we are able to identify the exact location of the vortices within 10 nm with respect to topographic features. The center of most of the vortices is located in between the grains appearing at the film surface....
متن کاملMechanisms of periodic pinning in superconducting thin films
We studied the changes in the superconducting properties of Nb films due to an array of Ni dots used as collective pinning sites. To determine the pinning mechanism, thin Ag layers of varying thicknesses were deposited on the Ni dots prior to the Nb film deposition. The Ag deposited on the pinning dots has little effect on the collective pinning phenomena, which implies that the main pinning me...
متن کاملDefining , and for YBCO Thin Films
The accommodation field, , is generally defined to be the field at which the cross over from single vortex pinning to collective pinning occurs. It is determined from magnetization curves as the point where the plateau ends and it used as a convenient way of comparing the pinning properties of superconducting films. Similarly, the characteristic field, , can be obtained from magneto-optical (MO...
متن کاملDepinning of a superfluid vortex line by Kelvin waves
We measure the interaction of a single superfluid vortex with surface irregularities. While vortex pinning in superconductors usually becomes weaker at higher temperatures, we find the opposite behavior. The pinning steadily increases throughout our measurement range, from 0.15Tc to over 0.5Tc. We also find that moving the other end of the vortex decreases the pinning, so we propose Kelvin wave...
